Florida advisor charged with kidnapping and battery, fired from RBC

Royal Bank of Canada Wealth Management has fired an advisor facing kidnapping and battery charges after he allegedly beat and imprisoned a woman in his Parkland, Florida, home just three weeks after being arrested for domestic violence against another woman.

According to local news reports, Scott Jay Matalon, 40, threw his girlfriend of two months into the shallow end of his pool during an argument, beat her and dragged her back to his home when she fled to a neighbor’s doorstep. This July 5 incident comes just three weeks after Matalon was arrested for beating another woman, who also claimed to be his girlfriend of two months, in Boca Raton.

An RBC spokesperson told Financial Planning over email that Matalon was placed on administrative leave and eventually fired after the brokerage investigated his alleged crimes.

“We investigate all reported violations of [our] code of conduct and take action when necessary,” RBC’s statement said.

According to the affidavit for his first arrest, Matalon kicked a woman in the stomach and then pushed her off the bed and into a dresser, injuring her back. Police also observed other bruises and injuries on the victim, which she said were caused by Matalon during a separate domestic violence incident.

On July 5, Matalon was charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, domestic battery by strangulation and battery, according to reports. The woman who claimed to be Matalon’s girlfriend attempted to escape several times and finally made it to a neighbor’s doorstep. The neighbor’s RING doorbell camera shows the victim asking for help before Matalon drags her away.

Matalon was taken to jail but released on bond after both incidents.

Matalon has worked in the industry since 2003 and is a licensed broker as well as investment advisor, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Matalon has been a managing director at RBC since 2019. Before that, he worked in New York at Ameriprise Financial Services for six years, according to his broker check record.
